MicroOptical on Monday unveiled a tiny display that clips onto a pair of eyeglasses for hands-free viewing of information from mobile devices such as Tablet PCs and laptops. The SV-6 PC Viewer attaches to the VGA port of a computer via a 4-foot cable and uses the Microsoft Multiple Monitors feature of the Windows operating system to project the equivalent of a full-size screen in front of the user's eyes. The viewer offers 18-bit color resolution, as is usable both indoors and outdoors, the company said. The battery-powered SV-6 PC Viewer is available now for $1995. Also on Monday, Westwood, Mass.-based MicroOptical introduced a developer's kit to allow application providers and system integrators to evaluate applications for wireless eyewear viewers. The DV-1 Digital Wireless Viewer Developer's Kit uses Bluetooth and MicroOptical's proprietary Bitmap Image Link System (MOBILS) to project images to a 12-bit qVGA display. The monocular viewer clips to either side of a pair of eyeglasses. The DV-1 kit includes a software guide and a set of APIs that can be used to integrate the eyewear viewer with electronic devices. It is currently available for $5,000.
